What to do when someone dies

When a loved one passes it can be stressful; and difficult to know what to do first, but there are several things that must be done before the funeral can take place. Here is a guide to help you during this time.

Expected deaths

At home

-
Inform the GP of the deceased or contact 111 if the death has occurred out of hours.
-
Contact your funeral director – once the death has been verified by a GP or district nurse, we will be able collect your loved one.
-
Register the death with the local council – this must be done within 5 days of the death, you will need to take with you the Medical Certificate of Death.
-
In the meantime, you can start arranging the funeral.
In a care home or in hospital

-
Contact the funeral director
-
Register the death with the local council – this must be done within 5 days of the death, you will need to take with you the Medical Certificate of Death.
-
In the meantime, you can start arranging the funeral.
Unexpected deaths
In the event of an unexpected death, you must contact the emergency services who will involve the coroner. The coroner will arrange for the deceased to be taken to the local hospital mortuary by a designated funeral director. You are not obliged to use this funeral director even if the deceased is transferred to their care after the coroner has completed their investigation.

Funeral arrangements can still be discussed in the meantime, but nothing can be finalised until the coroner has completed their investigation.
